The Best a British Village Fair has to Offer…
There can be no mistake for anyone in the area that it is Dittons Fair day, set on Giggs Hill Green, adjacent to the Portsmouth Road. A timed camera would have a field day. From first light the organisers arrive to a bare triangle of grass, fast forward to midday - packed with a colourful sea of marquees, gazebos and inflatables, not an inch to spare.
A bird’s eye view then gives witness to a steady stream of fairgoers emerging from driveways and pathways, joined by those from buses, on cycles and in cars to join the procession to Giggs Hill Green. Parents, grandparents, toddlers to teens, dog lovers, tea drinkers, bargain hunters - there is something for everyone.
The Dittons Fair, run by the scout group baring the same name, manages to bring together the best elements of the great British Village Fair. The huge bouncy slide that towers above the Portsmouth Road, polka dot pink whirling teacups, swings and fun house provide a carnival atmosphere but look further and The Dittons’ scout stalls offer a wide variety of activities at pocket money prices. Many of the stalls are vintage, lovingly restored and maintained for Fair Day each year. Come try your luck at crazy golf, the coconut shy, target ball, skittles to name but a few…...and let’s not forget the signature Racing Pigs! Don’t miss the Dittons Tombola, where once again we have been overwhelmed by support from local businesses, big and small, donating fantastic Tombola Prizes.
The tea tent offers a mixture of award winning Bachmanns patisserie alongside an array of home-made delights. The smell of the BBQs are enough to entice a hungry audience and the Bazaar of over thirty stall holders provides a variety of goods for those who fancy a spot of open air shopping. Also the toy, book, white elephant and plant stalls are good places to pick up a bargain.
The Arena events are a mecca for those seeking a place to rest their weary feet with a constant stream of entertainment including dog display team, and various sport displays throughout the afternoon. If you think you have a best in class dog there’s the Dotty Dog Show – one canine sandwiched between two buns certainly raised a few smiles last year.
...all against the backdrop of the local cricket team playing a home game sparsely dotted in their pristine whites on their clipped green pitch.
This is the only fundraiser that The Dittons Scout Group undertake during the year to enable the leaders, who volunteer their precious time, to deliver a full and enriching programme. So finally ... a special thanks to platinum sponsors Gascoigne Pees (Esher & Hinchley Wood) and Undercover Event Tents and to the many other local business supporters without whom the Fair would not be so successful. From The Dittons Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Adventure Scouts, their leaders and their parents...THANK YOU. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on 13th May 2012.
All the fun at the Fair in 2011……
The sun shone for the annual Dittons Scout Group May Fair on Sunday 15th May. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and their families all got involved in setting up this annual event and in making it the most successful fair to date making a fantastic £15,000!
Several thousand visitors came along from near and far to enjoy a traditional family fun-filled Sunday afternoon taking in the sideshows, craft and local community stalls and watch the varied arena events whilst enjoying home-made cakes and cups of tea.
As usual there was plenty of fun and activities put on for all the family including the coconut shy, pig racing, face painting and crazy golf, pop guns and football tombola. The fun fair was a big attraction with bouncy castles and slides to thrill the children.
The Dotty Dog Show and Dog Gymkhana pulled in the crowds as did the excellent shows put on by Teddington Mini Rugby Club and Hinchley Wood Samba Band.
The Fair’s success was also due, in no small part, to all the generous local companies who sponsored the event and continue to do so. Another amazingly successful Dittons Fair and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
