A very brief history of The Dittons Scout Group

 

In 1909 a group of boys got together after reading the fortnightly issue of 'Scouting for Boys' by Robert Baden-Powell. They met under a gas lamppost [later converted to electricity] on the north side of Giggs Hill Green - this lamppost now stands at the entrance to our ‘Shack’. 

 

Rome Attwell became the first Scoutmaster of The Dittons in the early summer of 1910.  Initially the group consisted of 28 boys.  Their first meeting place was on Giggs Hill Green, then they met in an old corrugated hut, sometimes known as the gymnasium, in the Churchyard at St. Nicholas Church (where the church hall now stands.) Occasionally they also met at the old fire station which stood at the corner of Giggs Hill Green and Watts Road.

 

Their first permanent headquarters was built in 1922 at the corner of Brooklands Road between the railway arches, this site is now occupied by the 1st Hinchley Wood headquarters.   In 1932 the group moved to ‘The Shack,’ a gift from a good friend of Scoutmaster Rome Attwell, and is still one of the best headquarters in the County of Surrey 75 years later.

 

In 2010 The Dittons is a thriving Scout Group and now boasts two Beaver Colonies, two Cub Packs and a Scout Troop.  We want to encourage more adults to become inspirational leaders and join the Dittons to keep building upon the firm foundations laid over the last 100 years.  If you interested in joining as a leader or wish for your son or daughter to become a member of the Dittons please go to our website: www.dittonsscouts.com
